History of Association
Midnapore College has been carrying on a glorious past, flourishing present and keeps far reaching prospective future in the fields of National movement, Cultural heritage and academic activities.
The first practical attempt to build a forum for the ex-students was in 1960s. Unfortunately, there is no recorded history of such attempt prior to this. But it has been traced that the college has a tradition of inviting an eminent ex-student as chief or special guest on the foundation day celebration function every year. However, during 1965 an attempt was made to organize the ex-students and that attempt had been continuing for two or three years. The initiative was mainly taken from the time of Sri Prodosh Kumar Bandopadhayay, now retired I.R.S. Officer, Sri Pritam Prasad Roy, Head of the Dept. of Physics, Viswabharati University, Prof Manik Prasad Bhakat, retired Professor and Sri Ajoy Kumar Chowdhuri, retired Librarian of this College . During the formation of Alumni Association of the college Bengal luminaries like Utpal Dutta, Shambhu Mitra and Tripti Mitra were present and they staged certain unforgettable snaps of some dramas in the Re-union.
Unfortunately, there was a transient ebb on the first euphoria of reunion of students mainly for financial crisis and also for the dearth of workers for the purpose. With its frail attempt the association began working and made its existence palpable by voicing forth the demand for establishing a B. Ed. College in Midnapore town. The then Secretary and President of the association were Prof Kumaresh Ghosh and Late Prof Sripati De respectively. Then followed a lean period of eight to ten years. Customary presence of the eminent ex-students as special guests continued. But one urge for a permanent organiztion of the ex-student was increasingly felt.
In 1987 a fresh attempt was made to reorganize the Alumni Association. This was possible at the initiative of the then Principal who was also an ex-student of the college, Sri Mukul Ranjan Roy, Prof Sudhansu Sekhar Pahari and Prof Jagabandhu Adhikari who infused energy into this organization at that time and added an impetus to it. An ad hoc committee was formed of those who convened the first general meeting on the basis of membership drive. A large number of ex-students became life members. Then a new committee comprised President, Vice President, Secretary and an executive committee. In the Annual General Meeting a constitution prepared by Prof Jagabandhu Adhikari, Head of the Dept of Political Science was accepted. The committee laid down a clear perspective of its aims and objectives. It aimed at academic development of the students and demanded for a Medical College in this town, Law College and an Engineering College in the undivided district of Midnapore. It continued its effort to introduce Post-Graduate courses in Midnapore College .It realized for the first time the need for a permanent bond with the college authority and made provision for it by electing Principal as the Ex- officio President of the Alumni Association. The appeal of the Association to receive help from the outgoing students who would pay Rs. 10/- each to its fund was accepted by the College Governing Body. This amount being regularly accepted helped to build permanent fund which in turn is now offered for the betterment of the College in various ways.
Midnapore College Alumni Association has at present more than five hundred life members and more than one hundred fifty annual members. The number of involved alumnus is too large to count as huge number of students is leaving the college every year after their graduation. The vibrant presence of the Association is to be felt in its Annual General Meeting, biennial election, publication of booklet every year, presentation or gifts to the alumnus. The role of the association in celebrating the 125th foundation year of the college is commendable and needs to be mentioned specially. Actually speaking that function had been very successful due to the participation of the alumnus.
The Association constructed a commemorative gate dedicated on that occasion in a befitting manner. The rainbow arch cast a splendour upon the outward appearance of the college thus additing to its general gait.
Midnapore College Alumni Association concentrates its energies on holding the annual reunion of the students. The preparation starts two months ahead of its date.
The Association of a college like ours must bridge the gap between the past and the present and steer firmly for the days to come. It needs the vibrant presence of more youths with energy and passion. We look forward to the bright days to come with supportive gestures from all well-wishers and alliances of this historic Institution.
